A Generic Four-step Methodology For Institutional Analysis AgEcon
Herrera, Paul A.; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido; Espinel, Ramon L..
The central hypothesis of this paper is that there may be situations in which the traditional approach to institutional analysis is of limited applicability. Such an approach, which has been called 'comparative institutional analysis', consists of comparing institutional environments and institutional arrangements in terms of specific economic or other efficiency criteria to see which one performs better. However, because of limitations to accurately predict the future performance of alternative institutional settings, comparisons are not always possible. Furthermore, in most cases the only information available is the performance of the current institutional setting. To account for this methodological deficiency, a generic methodology for institutional...

A nova economia institucional e sua aplicação no estudo do agronegócio brasileiro AgEcon
Mendes, Krisley; Figueiredo, Jeovan de Carvalho; Michels, Ido Luiz.
This paper presents the theoretical roots from which emerges the New Institutional Economics (NIS). It shows that the NIS, in discussion with other branches institutionalists, reveals important theoretical limitations and contradictions. The lack of that rescue in studies on agribusiness prevents the observation of important issues of the Brazilian agribusiness, such as conflict, power and culture in the formation of structures of governance. The paper presents, first, the link between the understanding agribusiness in its systemic form and the institutionalist thought. Then, recovers the sources and branches of Institutional Economics, and shows that NIS is linked to the methodological individualism, which differs from the original institutionalism. It is...

A NOVA ECONOMIA INSTITUCIONAL – N EI E OS SISTEMAS AGROFLORESTAIS – SAF’S: UM ESTUDO COM DUAS ORGANIZAÇÕES AGROFLORESTAIS NA REGIÃO AMAZÔNICA AgEcon
Carvalho, Otacilio Moreira De; Neto, Jose Moreira Da Silva; Carvalho, Erasmo Moreira De; Pereira, Sidinei Aparecido.

AgEcon
Arbage, Alessandro Porporatti; Peroni, Neimar Damian; Costa, Pedro Urubatan Neto Da.

COMPLEMENTARIDADES DA ECONOMIA DOS CUSTOS DE TRANSAÇÃO E DA TEORIA ECONÔMICA DAS CONVENÇÕES: UM ESTUDO DE CASO DO SISTEMA AGROINDUSTRIAL DO MEL DE CAMPO GRANDE – MS AgEcon
Sproesser, Renato Luiz; Rosina, Leonice; Vilpoux, Olivier Francois.
The theoretical framework developed by the Transaction Costs Economics has been used by several authors to improve the production system different actors’ relationships comprehension. However, Transaction Costs Theory application in agri-industrial Systems have been infrequently treated in scientific literature, especially in unstructured and incipient systems, such as beekeeping in the city of Campo Grande, in Mato Grosso do Sul - Brazil. In this way, this paper shows an analysis of conventions importance in transaction costs reduction at Honey Agri-industrial System in Campo Grande. To this finality, case studies were conducted using secondary and primary data (collected through interviews with production chain operators). Their results lead to the...

How to Approach a Market? A Theoretical Concept for Defining and Describing Land Markets AgEcon
Hurrelmann, Annette.
Land markets have received a considerable amount of attention in economic literature. Since the treatment of the topic covers various approaches, areas, and questions, it seems desirable to attempt an overview of the results. This paper devises a way in which to present a complete picture of the land market by drawing together the various contributions. The first step is to establish a method by which a market in its entirety can be defined. It is suggested that the application of Oliver Williamson's "Four levels of social analysis" is an appropriate approach to be used in this endeavour. In the second step, the contributions to land market research are reviewed, according to Williamson's scheme, within four broad categories: (1) embeddedness, (2)...

INSTITUTIONAL ECONOMICS AND THE EMERGENCE OF E-COMMERCE IN AGRIBUSINESS AgEcon
Moss, Charles B.; Schmitz, Troy G.; Kagan, Albert; Schmitz, Andrew.
The emergence of E-commerce in the 1990s heralded the arrival of the New Economy. However, the failure of numerous dotcoms since early 2001 has led to a debate regarding the future direction of E-commerce and its potential relevance for agribusiness. This study examines the economic implications of E-commerce for agribusiness within the framework of New Institutional Economics. The New Institutional Economics implies that E-commerce has the potential to reduce direct transactions costs in agricultural markets, but that it also may add additional indirect transactions costs. Depending upon the tradeoff between these costs, an institutional innovation which reduces the transactions costs may provide the impetus for an alternative marketing channel for...

L’émergence du marché de la compensation des zones humides aux États-Unis : impacts sur les modes d’organisation et les caractéristiques des transactions ArchiMer
Scemama, Pierre; Levrel, Harold.
In the United States, the Clean Water Act requires compensatory measures for aquatic ecosystems damaged by development projects. From the 90's to improve the quality of the system, we have seen the emergence of a market system to supervise the transactions related to the implementation of actions for compensation. The theoretical framework of neo-institutional economics states that the choice of the organization of a transaction is based on the minimization of transaction costs. These costs are related to the coordination mechanisms that are specific to each type of organization and which efficiency in terms of transaction costs depends on the characteristics of the transaction: asset specificity, uncertainty and frequency of the transactions. Transactions...

MARKETING CHANNELS COMPETE FOR U.S. STOCKER CATTLE AgEcon
Schmitz, Troy G.; Moss, Charles B.; Schmitz, Andrew.
This study investigates the underlying reasons for a producer's choice of marketing channels for stocker cattle in the United States. In addition to traditional public auctions, private sales, video auctions, and Internet auctions have been recently used in the marketing of stocker cattle. Findings show that while the number of marketing options may have increased in recent years, only relatively large producers can actually take advantage of these options. The marketing options for smaller producers are still limited due to their relative size. Also, the number of cattle marketed privately and through video and Internet auctions is found to be positively correlated with herd size. In addition, the New Institutional Economics (NIE) provides insights into...

Some like to join, others to deliver. An econometric analysis of farmers' relationships with agricultural co-operatives AgEcon
Pascucci, Stefano; Gardebroek, Cornelis.
In many European countries, farmers are a member of a processing or marketing co-operative, and most of these farmers also deliver their products to that co-operative. However, an extensive dataset of Italian farmers shows that not all members deliver to their co-op, and that there are also non-members that deliver. Using theoretical arguments from the New Institutional Economics literature, a bivariate probit model is estimated to explain co-op membership and delivery jointly. Results show that membership and delivering are indeed related, but also that different factors influence farmers’ decisions on membership and delivery.

The Quality of Audits - A Comparative Study of Auditing and Certification Schemes in the Food Sector AgEcon
Jahn, Gabriele; Schramm, Matthias; Spiller, Achim.
In spite of the increasing number of certification schemes in the food sector, there is only few research about the economics of certification. Given the rapid growth and the lack of experience the actors have to cope with different forms of opportunistic behaviour. The following paper describes the basic structure and information economics reasons why certification schemes are created. Subsequently, an institutionalistic model is presented which includes several starting points to increase quality of certification systems mainly based on analogies in financial auditing.
